 Riggs Community Health Center was founded as Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic, serving its first patients in 1988 when funds became available from the Indiana Department of Health. In June of 1988, in a 900 square foot apartment, the Clinic opened a prenatal clinic for two days a week and a well-child clinic once a week staffed by two part-time nurse practitioners, five volunteer OB/GYN physicians and one clerical worker. The Tippecanoe County Health Department oversaw Clinic operations.
In March of 1995, a task force appointed by the Tippecanoe County Commissioners, recommended that the Clinic to become a not-for-profit agency independent of the health department and that the current facility was inadequate to meet current and future needs of the community. The commissioners approved these findings and appointed a site committee to explore facility alternatives. In 1997 the Community Health Clinic became a Federally Qualified Health Center and after a successful fundraising campaign, broke ground for the new clinic on a lease site located on the corner of 18th and Hartford Streets. The new building was dedicated in May of 1998. In 2006 TCHC served 8,729 patients in more than 37,600 office visits. Strong support including community partnerships, volunteers, and financial donations made this vital service possible. In May 2009, the Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic was officially renamed Riggs Community Health Center honoring Dr. Riggs, the founding physician. Today, Riggs Community Health Center provides a wide range of medical and health related services to more than 11,024 residents of our community. |
